Kitesurfing at Malcesine, on Lake Garda

The winds, the places and the lift service

Thanks to its high number of windy days each year, Malcesine is one of the best places for kitesurfing on Lake Garda.
In the morning, the Peler will be waiting for you, a strong wind which blows from the north.

In the afternoon, the Ora, a steadier wind, will blow from the south and dies down at sunset which is later here than most places on Garda.

On Lake Garda there are two beaches which are organised and run by local clubs where you can go out independently.

The first is at Navene, 5km north of Malcesine. The other is at Campione on the west coast of Lake Garda.
To use either of these places and their services, you have to join the local club.

It is forbidden to leave from all other beaches on Lake Garda except for in particular wind conditions.

North wind kitesurfing spot

  • Campagnola Beach
This can be found 3km to the north of Malcesine.
From this beach on days of normal wind you can go out from the beach but only in the morning and in high season you must be back on the beach by 9am.

  • Retelino
You find this place 1km north of Malcesine, at the ferry landing stage.
Stay at least 200m away from the ferry port.
From this beach on days of normal wind you can go out from the beach but only in the morning and in high season you must be back on the beach by 9am.

  • Assenza Beach
You find this place 3km south of Malcesine in the borough of Brenzone sul Garda, in front of the Trimelone Islands.
From this beach on days of normal wind you can go out from the beach but only in the morning and in high season you must be back on the beach by 9am.
This is a good place to leave from when the wind is particularly gusty in Campagnola.

Keep an eye on the local kitesurfers to know when you need to head back in. If you aren't sure, ask a local.

Lift service

A valid alternative to leaving from the beach.
The Lift Service is run by the local schools and is aimed at independent kitesurfers: it's an out and back service in a
boat to get to the windiest places.
This is a great service because, not only do you get to the best places, you are watched and picked up if something unexpected happens.

Interested but never had a go?

Kitesurfing is fun, dynamic and easy to learn.
The basic level is possible for everyone, even those with no physical training.
Normally 5 or 6 lessons will be enough to get you kitesurfing autonomously.
